Just once, I'd like to serve a Queen I could respect, someone I
could truly believe in. A strong Queen who wouldn't fear my strength.
A Queen I could also call a friend.
The story:
Terreille is ruled by women of the Blood. And in this terrible and
dark time, the two half-brothers, Lucivar and Daemon live two very
different lives.
Lucivar is a slave. His father refused to have his wings cut of, and so his dark wings set him apart.
Daemon is a pleasure slave, the one called the Sadist. Both are controlled by their Rings of Obedience, a ring placed around their manhoods, and by which most males, and especially slaves, are controlled.
And there is the Prince, Saetan, who has waited so long for the daughter of his soul. For more than 50 000 years, he has ruled Hell, and he is getting tired. But still he waits.
And Jaenelle, a girl of about seven years. Innocent, powerful,
mystical and sweet, she is what the three have waited for so long.
But there are dangers, for some want her life, and her powers
themselves can be the death of her.
Thoughts about the book:
This is a wonderful novel, and Anne Bishop's first. She has created a
strange, disturbing world, and it took some chapters to become used to
the new way of seeing magic and power.
It is not a book for children. Seriously, it is cruel and dark, but the characters shine brightly in this dark web.
I cannot believe that the names here are coincidences. Saetan, Daemon, Lucivar (pronouce the 'v' as an 'f'), Cassandra, Mephis. And Hell. Why this is so, might be revealed in the next books, but it is not neccessary. The story is brilliantly told and Daemon and Lucivar and Saetan, and even more, Jaenelle, are characters one could come to care about.
