"You all bear witness!" he cried in an indignation that held an undertone of wild joy. Now he had the justification he had long wished for, to see the Lady Mara ground under his heel in utter defeat. "The Acoma have offered the Anasati insult! Let all present be informed that alliance is dead between our two houses. I claim my right to expunge this shame to my honor, and blood will be called for in payment."
Warning!
This is the third book in a series, and reading this review without
having read book one might spoil some of your fun.
The story:
Having conquered her most dangerous enemy, the Minwanabi family, Mara
has finally agreed to marry Hokanu of the Shinzawai. She has sent her
lover, Kevin, back to his own world. But he has left traces of
himself; not only in the changes in her life, and the lives of all she
loves, but also in the shape of Justin, Mara's and Kevin's son.
And being named Servant of the Empire gives her some security. But there are still powerful enemies who wants her dead, and the death of Lord Jingo of the Anasati has brought his son Jiro to power. When a failed assassination attempt claims the life of Jiro's newphew, he has no longer a reason for keeping the delicate peace between the two families.
Again, Mara is plunged into a bloody game of power and politics.
Mara's path is taking her away from the empire of the Tsuranuanni, in
quest for an unlikely ally. Now the stakes have increased again. For
into the conflict is drawn the Cho-Ja, and the Assembly. And suddenly
the future of the empire itself is at stake, and the prize is the
white throne of the Emperor itself.
Thoughts about the book:
A powerful game of power. Different cultures clash together, and
there is the struggle to make right an injustice that was done
thousands of years ago.
This is a wonderful story of individuals who choose against a strong
tradition, to do what they think is right for the whole Empire, and
also what is right for others who share the world with them.
