"--Come in--Carver, answer!"
"--Too late, you bastards--they got the shuttle and the strip!" That
from one of the other local sources. Ofelia felt a pressure in her
chest. The creatures had blown up a shuttle?
The story:
Ofelia is an old woman. Too old, she feels, to move away from her
colony with the others, to a new planet, and a new colony. But all
the people must leave, to make room for the new settlers.
So she hides. When the new settlers arrive, they land far away from her colony. In secrecy, she listens in on their communication while landing, and she hears how the people of the shuttle are killed by intelligent aliens that noone knew about.
Thoughts about the book:
This book is brilliant. The heroine is not a sweet old woman, but she
is so human. A believable alien race, and those who try to
understand them, while teaching our own culture to them.
Perhaps the plot isn't very original. But the small twists make this
book truly enjoyable.
