Shadowfane

"Very well, then." Tamlin gestured with a shimmering jingle of bells. "You have earned the chance to train." He paused, and a gleam of admonition lit his eyes. "But remember, self-defense will not avail if on the day of trial no weapon is ready to your hand."

WARNING!
This is the third book in a series, and reading this review without having read book one and two might spoil some of your fun.

The story:
Jaric has finally given in to his fate, and has requested to be trained as Fire-Lord. Only in this way can he free Anskiere, and give up the burden of the Keys of Elrinfaer.

But in Shadowfane, the demons plot Jaric's downfall, and the death of Keithland. If Jaric fails, Keithland will stand no chance, and the demons hav e a champion on their own now; Maelgrim, who once was Emien, Taen's brother.

Thoughts about the book:
I think this is in many ways the best of the Cycle of Fire. The plot is a little basic, but the science fiction element fits in, and there are some really remarkable people in this story.

My favourite character is the Kielmark, and after him, Corley. Those, I think, more than Taen and Jaric, are typical characters of Janny Wurts; then are so much more than they seem.
